Sundarban Permits and Paperwork: What You Need Before You Go
Every year people drive four hours from Kolkata, reach the jetty, and find out their paperwork is wrong.
It is almost always the same mistake, it is entirely avoidable, and nobody explains it properly because operators assume you will let them handle it. Most of the time they do handle it. But you should still know what is being handled, because one part of it is yours alone and no agency can fix it for you at the checkpoint.
Here is the whole system in plain terms.
The One Rule That Catches People Out
You must carry the original of your photo ID. A photograph of it on your phone is not accepted.
That is it. That is the mistake. Digital copies are fine for making the booking, and your operator will ask for scans in advance to process the permit, which leads people to assume the scan is the document. It is not. At the checkpoint an officer wants the physical card in his hand, matched against the name on the permit, for every person on the boat including children.
Carry the original. Carry two photocopies of it as well, because the permit office wants those and photocopying facilities at Pakhiralaya are not something to rely on.
Who Needs a Permit
Everyone entering the forest zone, and separately, the boat itself.
There are two permissions running in parallel. The first is a per-person entry permit for every passenger. The second is forest clearance for the vessel, which your boat operator arranges and which is why you cannot simply hire any boat and sail into a creek. Both are checked.
A licensed forest guide is also mandatory on every boat. This is not an optional extra you can decline to save money — a boat without a guide does not enter the forest.
Which Documents are Accepted
Indian Visitors
Any one of these, in original: Aadhaar card, Voter ID, driving licence, or passport. Plus two photocopies.
Every passenger needs their own. Families routinely arrive with documents for the adults and nothing for the children, and children are counted as passengers on the permit.
Foreign Nationals
Original passport, valid Indian visa, and photocopies of both. Some cases also require additional clearance, and processing takes longer — typically a day or two rather than minutes.
Foreign visitors should start the process two to three days before travel at minimum, and tell the resort or operator at the time of booking rather than on arrival. A group with one foreign passport in it has different lead times from an all-Indian group, and it is far easier to arrange in advance than to fix on the day.
Where Permits are Issued
Sajnekhali Range Office is the main permit office for the Sundarban Tiger Reserve. Permissions are also obtainable through the Office of the Field Director at Canning, and at other departmental offices including Sonakhali and Bagna.
| If you are… | What happens |
| On a package | Your resort or operator submits the paperwork in advance. You send ID scans and a full passenger list at booking, and carry the originals. |
| Travelling independently | You go to the Sajnekhali Range Office yourself with originals and photocopies for every passenger. |
| A foreign national | Longer processing and additional documents. Start two to three days ahead through your operator. |
With correct documents in hand, permits are usually issued quickly — a matter of minutes rather than hours. The delays almost always come from missing photocopies or a passenger whose name was left off the list.
There is No Official Online Booking Portal
This is worth saying bluntly, because it is where people lose money. There is no reliable government website that sells Sundarban safari permits online. Several private sites present themselves as official booking portals. They are not.
Permits are arranged through the Forest Department, either directly at the range office or by a registered operator on your behalf. If a site claims to be the official portal and asks for payment, treat it with suspicion. Booking a package through a resort is perfectly normal and is how most visitors do it — just understand that you are paying the resort, which then handles the departmental process, not paying the department through a third-party website.
The Rules That Apply Once You are Inside
- No Overnight Stays Inside The Forest: Not in a camp, not on a boat. Boats moor outside the forest limits. Anyone offering a night inside the reserve is offering something that is not permitted.
- Daylight Hours Only: Entry from around seven in the morning, and boats must be out by late afternoon, roughly four to five o’clock depending on the zone. No tourist boat stays inside after sunset.
- Approved Channels Only: Boats may use permitted creeks and routes. A guide who refuses to take you somewhere is following the rules, not being unhelpful.
- Life Jackets For Everyone: Required on board. If a boat does not have enough for the group, that is a reason not to board it.
- No Plastic: The forest is a no-plastic zone and fines apply for carrying or discarding it. Take a refillable bottle.
- Buffer Zone and Core Zone are Different: Tourist routes run in the buffer zone. The core zone requires separate permission and is genuinely restricted.
- Stay On The Boat and The Walkways: You do not get off at the bank. The watchtowers and canopy walks are the only places you leave the boat, and they are fenced for a reason.
Fees Change, So Confirm Rather Than Assume
Entry charges, boat permissions, guide rates and camera fees are set by the Forest Department and revised without much notice. Figures published on travel blogs — including rates quoted a year ago — go out of date quietly.
Ask your operator for the current schedule when you book, and treat any number you read online as indicative. Foreign nationals in particular should check, because the rates applying to them were revised substantially upward in recent years.
A Short Pre-Departure Checklist
- Original photo ID for every passenger, children included.
- Two photocopies of each ID.
- Full passenger list sent to your operator in advance, with names spelled as they appear on the ID.
- Passport and visa originals plus copies, for foreign nationals, arranged two to three days ahead.
- Cash drawn in Canning or Kolkata — there are no ATMs at Pakhiralaya.
- A refillable water bottle rather than packaged plastic.
- Confirmation from your operator of what the package covers and what is payable separately.
Solitary Nook has been arranging permits for guests at Pakhiralaya since 1995. Send us your passenger list when you book and we will handle the departmental side — you only need to bring the originals. Send an enquiry.
